Steps in the Process

How the Program Works

  1. We ask each family to submit an application.
  2. We then sign prospective parents up for our Pre-Adoptive training series which we offer several times throughout the year.
  3. After parents successfully complete the training, we invite them to complete a home study.
  4. After the home study is completed, AdoptionWorks staff will train the family on how to search for children on the internet. Staff will assist in the search for children through direct contact with child welfare agencies. The average length of wait for a placement, from the time that the home study is completed is approximately nine to twelve months.

Match, Placement, and Finalization

  1. Once a child or sibling group is identified, the family receives any pertinent medical, social, psychological, and behavioral information that is available on the child. AdoptionWorks is with the family through every step of the process, as we learn more about the child, and help the family to assess whether the child being considered is the right match for them.
  2. Once the child is placed with the family, AdoptionWorks provides the required Post-Placement supervision through monthly visits. AdoptionWorks is available to support the family, answer questions, provide referrals, help with problems, etc. as everyone develops a relationship with this new member of the family. Our Center for Adoptive Families is also available for support and counseling as needed.
  3. After the child has been in placement for a minimum of six months, AdoptionWorks assists the family in moving toward the finalization of the adoption.
