 Super-Parenting Support Group

All parents struggle at times and need a listening ear. Parents with challenging children need creative strategies to successfully raise their children. The usual parenting strategies rarely work, leaving parents feeling helpless, hopeless, and exhausted. Join us the third Wednesday of each month to refuel and recharge, share parenting information, offer and receive support, and learn about resources in your community. The group will be facilitated by two licensed social workers with years of experience working with adopted children and families. As experienced parents themselves, they have experienced the joys and frustrations of parenting challenging children. Come and share in a caring and supportive atmosphere with others who understand. Attend one or multiple sessions on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Price: One-time fee of $25, attend as few or as many sessions as you like after registering.

Meeting Dates: June 16, July 21, August 18, September 15, October 20, November 17, December 15

Time: 7:30 to 9:00 pm

 Horseback Riding Summer Camps

Self-Esteem with Horseback Riding Camp for ages 7 to 12:

All parents want their children to be confident and happy and to enjoy positive friendships. Adopted children sometimes feel “different” from other children, making it more difficult to develop a positive identity and form good peer relationships. This week-long camp is designed to help children build self-esteem, practice day-to-day social skills, and learn how to make and maintain friendships. Along with self esteem and social skills activities, campers will explore identity, family, and feelings that adopted children often share. Children will spend part of each day learning how to groom, care for, and ride the horses as a means of reinforcing important skills and lessons. Horseback riding experience is not required.  Through arts, crafts, music, role-plays, games, and horseback riding, your children will enjoy a fun-filled and educational week.

Dates: August 23rd to 27th, 2010

Time: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Place: Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation, Leesburg, VA (www.ltrf.org)

Fee: $320 per child

Self-Exploration in Partnership with Horses Summer Camp for ages 10 to 15:

The period of early adolescence can be a highly stressful time marked by struggles related to identify formation and self esteem.  The normative issues of early adolescence can be intensified for adopted pre-teens and teens who may be questioning their past, wondering who they are, and feeling like they do not truly belong.  This week long camp is designed to help early teens build confidence, explore their identity, and improve social skills in order to promote healing and personal growth.  Issues around adoption will be normalized and participants will have a chance to share their feelings and concerns with others who are experiencing the same issues.  Through a series of interactive, experiential activities, participants will work in partnership with the horses to learn important life lessons and skills.  Horseback riding experience is not required.  In addition to equine-faciliated learning, music, videos, games, role plays and arts and crafts will be integrated into the camp, ensuring that participants are actively engaged and having fun throughout the day.

Dates: August 9th to 13th, 2010

Time: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Place: Great Strides, Damascus, MD (www.greatstrides.org)

Fee: $320 per child

Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program (DBT) Parenting Adolescents Through Mindfulness

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive therapeutic program that has been adapted for adolescents who are experiencing intense negative emotions that can lead to self-injurious behaviors, anger outbursts, and difficulty with interpersonal relationships. In this model, parents and their children learn skills acquisition in a multifamily setting. As parents obtain a better understanding of their child’s emotional world and learn coping strategies, they become better equipped to coach their adolescents in the home environment.

This program will begin in October with ongoing enrollment.  For more information, please contact Erica Moltz at emoltz@adoptionstogether.org.
