Ethnic Hair and Skin Care for the Transracially Adopted Child

A common concern among the parents of trans-acially adopted children is how to properly care for their child’s hair and skin. Led by a licensed cosmetologist with more than 20 years of experience, this two-hour seminar will provide adoptive and potential adoptive parents of transracially adopted children with information and guidance on what products to use, common mistakes to avoid, and styling tips, strategies and tools. Participants will also learn about cultural norms and attitudes related to ethnic skin and hair, as well as the importance of maintaining a good hair and skin care regime. If you are feeling perplexed or uncertain or simply want to learn more, please join us for this highly informative and fun interactive workshop.

Talking with Your Child About Adoption

One of the most difficult, but important, aspects of being an adoptive parent is learning how to comfortably discuss the adoption experience with your child. Parents all want to respond appropriately to their children’s feelings about adoption, but may lack the skills and confidence to do so.  It is equally important for adopted children to be able to share their thoughts, questions, and concerns in an open and supportive environment. This seminar will provide parents with information and techniques for talking with their children in a developmentally appropriate manner, and for helping their children cope with comments, feelings, and intrusive questions.

Saturday, September 11, 2010 from 1:30-4:00 pm - Silver Spring Office - Fee: $50

Getting the Services You Need to Help Your Child Succeed

All parents want their children to be happy and successful.  Children who experience emotional, behavioral, or learning difficulties may require extra support and outside assistance in order to reach their full potential. It is not always easy to know when and where to turn for help, or how to intervene and communicate with teachers and other professionals who directly impact the life of your child.  This seminar will help you to learn how to work effectively with schools and outside agencies to ensure that your child’s educational, social and emotional needs are met.  Some of the topics that will be addressed include: Understanding the IEP process; Special education eligibility criteria; Parent rights and responsibilities in the IEP process; Hints for working with the schools; Assessments and evaluations; How to find and choose a therapist; and Community resources for children with special needs.

Saturday, November 20, 2010 from 1:30-3:30 pm - Silver Spring Office - Fee: $50
