Parental Qualifications for Adoption in Russia

Married couples and single women who are at least 25 years old may adopt.  We prefer no more than 45 years difference between the child’s age and the age of the younger adopting parent. Childless families need to be open to adopting a child of either gender.

 Russia Adoption Program and Procedure

Our Russia program is one of our strongest programs. We have worked with the same wonderful representatives for over a decade and the vast majority of children placed through our program are thriving in their new homes. Current adoption regulations in Russia require the family to make two or three trips.

Once your dossier is complete, it will be sent to a particular region and you will wait for a referral.  Whenever possible, we provide information about the child you will be traveling to meet. Typically, you will receive a referral within 6 - 12 months (depending on the age and gender of the child requested) and then travel within 1-2 months after accepting a referral.

On the first trip, you will be able to meet, hold and play with your child to be certain that you do wish to proceed with the adoption. To help you make your decision, we also provide a list of US physicians with expertise in international children. These physicians are able to view videos and medical reports to give an assessment of the child’s development and health. After a stay of approximately 5 days, you will return to the US. Some regions have longer stays.

Your second trip to Russia will take place approximately 2-3 months after your first. Both parents must travel to attend the court hearing and to complete the adoption. A 10-day appeal period is routinely scheduled to follow the court hearing. You may choose an extended trip or return home and complete the adoption in a third trip. You will travel to Moscow, Russia to obtain the child's U.S. visa and then you will bring your child home!

Upon completion of your adoption, you will register your child's Russian passport at the Russian Consulate. In addition, you will complete the post placement reports required by the Russian Federation and by our agency. These reports are due 2 months, 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, and 36 months following the adoption.
